What is Cottage Core & Why is it Making a Comeback This Spring?

Sometimes you just have to get away. Pack your bags, hitch up your wagon, and journey onwards to make your way to the countryside. That's the promise cottage core offers to its most devoted followers. A life where labor makes way for leisure, and the beauty of nature and slow living is not only appreciated, it's revered.

The popularity of the Cottage Aesthetic has been slowly growing in popularity online since 2018, but it wasn't until the world went into lockdown in 2020 that interest in the trend exploded exponentially. Birthed perhaps as a reaction against the ills of hustle culture in the late 2010s, early Cottage Core elements grew out of what was the hipster trend, this time with a greater emphasis on slow fashion. The trend could be easily identified through features such as Victorian silhouettes, wool and cotton garments, and delicate lace-patterned dresses that had suddenly ballooned in popularity.

Exemplified by a desire to disconnect, cottage core offers the choice to unplug from the busy, hectic matrix of modern living and embrace a world where inconvenience is a virtue. Other hallmarks of the trend include little to no technology use, country living of both the wooded or countryside variety, gardening, intricately woven baskets, & baking anything and everything from scratch. Safe to say, whatever your interests are, there is an avenue somewhere that you can call home within in the world of Cottage Core.

In a post-lockdown world, the Cottage Aesthetic still has a lot to offer. The trend has evolved in many interesting ways, picking up a new cohort of fans along the way. We've seen the girlies who rock this trend mix it with other designs that wouldn't necessarily harken back to a bygone era. Alternatively, the girls who may not have embraced the trend fully back in the day have incorporated some of its hallmarks into their wardrobes, such as gingham, bandanas, and flowy prairie silhouettes for a cultural exchange that the past and present can both get on board with.

How is Cottage Core Coming Back This Season?

This season, the cottage look is once again making its way back into the trend cycle in a big way. Fawn print is the animal print of the moment, as a doe-eyed alternative to cheetah or leopard print looks. A very spring sage green has also entered the chat and made the many looks it's showing up on appear as though they're in bloom. In general, many of the looks we're seeing appear as though they've been plucked straight from the garden, and we're loving it. Dip your toe into the trend with a butterfly hair clip or some whimsical garden inpired nail styling. This month, with a few quick tweaks, you can take a trip to the cottage without ever leaving town.
